Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day

Walk & Roll to School Day is an annual event that involves communities from across the country (and globe!) walking and rolling to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Today, thousands of schools across America—from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico—participate every October. Over time, this celebration has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school.

Walking Safety Tips:

• Walk on the sidewalk. If you have to walk in the road, face the traffic so that you can see any cars coming and keep as far from the roadway and traffic as possible.

• Cross only at corners or marked crosswalks. Look left, right, and then left again before you step into the street. If a car is parked where you are crossing, make sure there is no driver in the car. Then go to the edge of the car and look left-right-left until no cars are coming.

• Continue looking for oncoming cars while you are crossing and walk, don’t run.

• Wear reflective or bright clothing so motorists can see you.

Bicycling Safety Tips:

• Always wear a helmet that is properly fitted.

• Ride single file on the right side of the road or trail in the same direction as other vehicles and come to a complete stop before crossing streets. Always walk your bike when crossing.

• Always use proper hand signals when turning and stopping.

• Wear reflective or bright clothing so motorists can see you.

• Be courteous to pedestrians. Use a bicycle bell to alert pedestrians that you are passing.

Thank you to parent Nick Hill for coordinating this event one last time, and to Meghan Wirth for taking over!!
